OI change vs OI level

OI LEVEL tells you the CUMULATIVE positioning at a strike. OI CHANGE tells you what happened TODAY. For directional trading, CHANGE is far more useful — it's the fresh money moving markets right now. This page focuses purely on today's ΔOI. For yesterday's/older OI, see the standard chain in /dashboard.

The four canonical OI signals

Long buildup = price up + OI up = fresh longs entering. Continuation likely. Short buildup = price down + OI up = fresh shorts entering. Continuation likely. Long unwinding = price down + OI down = longs exiting under pressure. Reversal risk. Short covering = price up + OI down = shorts closing under pressure. Bullish momentum. Combining ΔOI direction with the day's price change classifies each strike into one of these four buckets.

Why fresh writing at a strike is bullish/bearish

Option WRITERS take on unlimited risk in exchange for premium. They only write at strikes they believe the price WON'T reach by expiry. So massive PE writing at strike 24000 (below spot 24200) = writers are confident spot stays above 24000 = bullish signal. Massive CE writing at 24500 (above spot) = writers confident spot stays below = bearish. The larger the fresh writing (bigger ΔOI), the higher the writer's conviction.

OI change vs GEX walls

Today's OI change becomes tomorrow's GEX walls. When a strike sees +50K PE writing today, it appears as a fresh PE wall in tomorrow's [BANKNIFTY GEX profile](/gamma-exposure/banknifty) — dealers are now net-short puts and MUST buy futures if spot approaches that strike (auto-support). So OI-change and GEX are two views of the same underlying flow, with a ~1-day lag.

Real-time bar-level (paid)

This snapshot is aggregate day-so-far. For 5-minute bar-level ΔOI with per-bar aggressor breakdown, use the [Order Flow terminal](/orderflow). Also has an OI heatmap that animates through the session so you can see WHEN each buildup happened.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is ΔOI different from volume?

Volume = total trades. ΔOI = net new positions (opens minus closes). A high-volume day with flat ΔOI = existing positions being churned.

Which signal is most reliable?

Long buildup and short covering on ATM strikes with rising volume are the highest-confidence.

How fresh is the data?

60-sec cache on this page. Live in /dashboard for logged-in users.

Where does the OI data come from?

Live NSE open interest from our real-time feed, with redundant backups.

Why do some strikes show negative ΔOI?

Because both sides of the trade were closing existing positions (unwinding). Position count fell.
