NIFTY Sector Breadth — Live
Aggregate NSE breadth: advances, declines, unchanged and bias classification.
What is market breadth?
Market breadth measures how many stocks are RISING vs FALLING on a given day. NIFTY's headline number can rise 1% while 60% of underlying stocks are DOWN — this is bad breadth and usually signals a narrow, unsustainable rally. Wide breadth (70%+ stocks up on a rally day) confirms the move. The hero card shows current advances, declines, unchanged, and the Adv/Dec ratio.
Reading the Adv/Dec ratio
Ratio > 2.0 = broad-based rally, high conviction, unlikely to reverse today. 1.0-2.0 = moderate rally. 0.5-1.0 = mixed / distribution. < 0.5 = broad-based selling, high risk of continuation lower. Compare with NIFTY's price move: if NIFTY is up 0.8% but Adv/Dec is 0.7, that rally is NARROW and likely to fade. If NIFTY is down 0.8% but Adv/Dec is 1.3, that fall is likely a bull rest, not a top.
Breadth divergence — the leading indicator
When NIFTY makes a new high but breadth (Adv/Dec) is MUCH lower than at the previous high, that's a bearish breadth divergence — the leaders are still lifting the index but the average stock has already rolled over. This precedes market tops on ~65% of major highs over the past decade. The opposite (breadth divergence during a fall) precedes bottoms less reliably (~55%), but it's still an early-warning signal.
Sector rotation context
Breadth alone doesn't tell you WHICH sectors are leading. Sector rotation charts (banking, IT, auto, pharma, energy, FMCG) reveal WHERE the flow is going. When defensives (FMCG, pharma) lead while cyclicals (banking, auto) lag = risk-off rotation, corrective phase likely. Cyclicals leading = risk-on. The /dashboard has a live sector heatmap with per-sector Adv/Dec.
Historical breadth-price correlation
5-year correlation between Adv/Dec ratio and next-day NIFTY move: ~+0.25. Not huge, but useful as a filter. Breadth is most predictive in the 90-minute window before session close — the classification often holds through the next session's open.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is breadth calculated?
Count of NSE 500 stocks up vs down vs unchanged, updated every few minutes.
Does breadth work for BANKNIFTY?
We focus on NIFTY 500 breadth (the aggregate). Sector-specific breadth is in /dashboard.
What if breadth is very negative but NIFTY is up?
It's a narrow rally driven by a few heavyweights. Usually reverses within 1-3 sessions.
How often does this update?
60-sec cache on this page. NSE publishes breadth continuously.
What's the Adv/Dec on a big up day?
Typically 2.5-4.0. Below 1.5 on a supposed 'rally day' is a strong warning.
